Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare for basic foot skin and nail care.
  • Confirm that prior assessment has identified need for foot care services within scope of own job role.
  • Interpret individualised plan to determine requirements for foot care.
  • Prepare a safe and comfortable setting.
  • Gather and prepare equipment and materials, including personal protective equipment (PPE), following infection control procedures.
       
Element: Complete care routine.
  • Explain foot skin and nail care procedures to the person.
  • Assist the person to remove and put on shoes, socks and hosiery where necessary.
  • Correctly position the person for foot skin and nail care to minimise risk to the person and the worker.
  • Follow infection control procedures when providing service.
  • Perform washing, drying, filing and skin care tasks according to the person’s needs as outlined in the individualised plan.
       
Element: Clean and store equipment and materials.
  • Collect, handle and dispose of biological waste material according to organisational policies and procedures.
  • Clean and store equipment according to manufacturer guidelines, setting protocols and infection control procedures.
       
Element: Document the person’s information.
  • Record basic foot skin and nail care services provided according to organisational policies and procedures.
  • Recognise and document indicators of foot issues requiring professional attention and make referrals to health professionals in a timely manner.

Assessment Tasks

Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
